Cricut How To
Would you love to create custom scrapbooking layouts or paper crafts? Do you ever wish that you could cut any shape you wanted to and not be bound by the limitations and problems that accompany using punches?
Look no further; the Cricut (pronounced “cricket”) is a revolutionary personal cutting machine, brought to you by the innovators and paper crafting leaders at Provo Craft. The Cricut does not require a computer or any additional hardware, but instead makes use of cartridges to give you abundant choices of die cut shapes and fonts.
The Cricut machine is growing in popularity, but perhaps you are in need of a little Cricut how-to. The Cricut, although complex in its creative possibilities, is a simple machine to use, and a little Cricut how to will certainly go a long way!
Cricut How-To
Our Cricut how to will begin with a basic run-down of how the machine works. The Cricut cutting machine is a portable unit that will conveniently plug into any grounded 110 wall outlet, which is the standard for household outlets.
After reading the Cricut how to instruction and idea booklet, simply press the “on” button and go from there. Cricut will do the cutting for you to free more time for you to create and imagine. The Cricut is a cartridge-powered tool, so you must insert a cartridge into the machine in order for it to produce die cuts.
Purchase of the Cricut machine includes one cartridge, George, and additional cartridges may be purchased at craft stores, discount retailers, local scrapbooking stores, or online. The cutting blade itself is guided by an electronic cutting process. This means that you do not have to do anything to power the machine or actually cut the paper! The machine cuts letters/shapes/phrases ranging from 1-inch to 5 ½ -inches tall, as well as titles and borders as long as 11-inches.
You will need to insert paper into the Cricut, from which your die cuts will be made. The machine has a paper saving option that cuts letters/shapes/phrases in an arrangement that minimizes the amount of waste from every cut.
The Cricut can cut a wide range of paper from vellum to cardstock up to .5 mm thick. Provo Craft has created cardstock pads and designer paper pads that coordinate with the Cricut shape cartridges. These papers fit perfectly in the Cricut.
You can unload the paper and remove just the pieces you need. You can then reload the paper at a later time and navigate to any open area to resume cutting. There is even a Paper Save mode, which will pack in any selected cuts to optimize the space needed.
The Cricut personal electronic cutting machine comes with a Cricut how to booklet to address any basic start-up needs you may have. Journaling Exercises: Journaling Ideas for Your Scrapbook

Does your mind go blank when it’s time to add journaling to your scrapbook pages? You’re not alone. Learning some simple journaling exercises can get that pen moving. Many consider journaling their least favorite part of scrapbooking. Don’t let journaling get you down, it is a vital part of our scrapbook page layouts.
Journaling adds depth and meaning to our layouts. It captures so much more about the stories behind the photos. There are many ways to include journaling in our scrapbooks, and lots of places to look for inspiration. Let’s take a look at some journaling ideas for your scrapbook.
Divide and Conquer — Why do we have a difficult time journaling on the scrapbook pages we just created? Creating the scrapbook page layouts is a right brain activity, while journaling on those pages is a left brain activity. Some may find it difficult to switch gears easily. Try creating page layouts and journaling at separate times.
Write a letter — Journaling in your scrapbook may feel awkward. Try journaling as if you were writing a letter to someone. Who will be looking at your scrapbooks? Write as if you were speaking to them. Most of us will be sharing our scrapbooks with good friends and family.
Spur of the moment — Jot down poems, quotes, phrases and other journaling ideas right when the inspiration hits. If you wait until you have time to scrapbook, you may forget. Carry a small notebook with you to write in. Keep one in your purse or in the car.
Resource File — Create a resource file to organize and store information that you may want to include in your scrapbooks. Use a binder or find some space in a filing cabinet. An expandable file or a storage container might do the trick. Some items you may consider storing for future use are…
Postcards brochures pamphlets magazine/newspaper clippings programs invitations greeting cards notes and letters
Email — Save or print emails from your family and friends. These may contain some real treasures; remarks, sayings and stories to use in your scrapbooks.
Lists and bullet points — Using lists and bullet points can keep information clear and to the point. This is a great technique for organizing a lot of information in a small amount of space.
How to get started
Handwritten journaling is a great method for traditional scrapbooking. Your handwriting leaves your personal touch on the page, becoming a legacy for future generations. What if you don’t like your handwriting? Here are some alternatives
Computer generated – Using a computer to generate your journaling gives you many choices of fonts, sizes and colors, but you lose the personal quality of handwriting. Be sure to print your journaling on acid free paper.
Handwriting font – Turn your handwriting into a font. This allows you to print your journaling from your computer, but still maintains some of the personal element of your handwriting.
Combination - Add your handwriting in small areas such as dates and photo labels, while printing the journaling from your computer. This will keep the personal element of your writing on the page.
Your families memories are important. Regardless of the method you choose, just make sure you journal on your scrapbook pages.
What to write on a page
We’ve looked at some ways to add journaling to the page. Are you wondering what to journal about? Here are some important items to include.
Scrapbooking page title – A title let’s others know what the page is about. It can also help set the mood for the page. A title can be added in handwriting, with stencils, stickers or pre-made titles.
The five W’s - The basics of each layout should be the five W’s; who, what, when, where and why. Write the names of the people in the photos. List full names, not everyone knows who Uncle Jim is. Include the dates the photos were taken. As time passes it will be harder to remember. Don’t forget where you were and what you were doing, why the photos were taken. You may also want to include the funny stories and memorable events not shown in the photos. Include your thoughts and feelings.
Poems and quotes – Not sure you can find just the right words? Still have a bit of space you want to fill? Try adding a poem or quote to the page. Lyrics from your favorite song are another great idea. Poems and quotes also help set the mood for your layout.
Make it interesting
The information journaling adds to the page is important, but let’s look at how journaling can add interest to your page as well.
Outline your journaling -Draw an outline around your journaling with one of your permanent acid-free pens. This will make your journaling stand out on the page. You can also add a frame around it.
Journaling box – Write in a journaling box. Many companies offer journaling boxes You can make your own by matting lined paper with a coordinating color paper. Add a sticker to spice up the journaling box.
Monogram - Use a larger size for the beginning letter in the first word of your title or journaling to add some interest.

15 Tips For Scrapbooking With Buttons

Buttons are not just for clothing. It’s unclear when scrapbooking with buttons began as a trend. Even in early scrapbook albums, it wasn’t unusual to see a button placed on a scrapbooking page. Quite often it was a keepsake button, like from a vintage piece of clothing or a baby girl’s first dress. As scrapbooking pages started to become more 3-D and scrappers looked for unique embellishments for their pages, buttons became more popular. Manufacturers started offering buttons to coordinate with their paper lines, and buttons with themes like Christmas and sports became available. Monthly scrapbooking kits and page kits often include complementary buttons as part of their packages. Consider these tips for scrapbooking buttons on your pages.
1. Buttons lined up together can make a border for your scrapbooking page layouts.
2. Place buttons in your titles by using them to dot your “i”s. You can also use them as the center of letters like “o” and “p.”
3. Buttons can be secured to a page using embroidery floss by sewing it into the page.
4. Glue dots work very well to adhere larger-sized buttons to a page, as well as buttons that are not flat on the bottom.
5. A few buttons make nice accents to anchor a ribbon border to a page. Again, glue dots will securely attach the buttons to the ribbon.
6. Try placing a button on the flap of an envelope to decorate a simple page element.
7. Flowers are still very popular on scrapbooking pages. Silk or paper flowers come in all sizes and colors now. A button makes a perfect center for a flower. An added benefit is that the button can hide the adhesive that typically shows through a paper flower.
8. Take 4 small buttons and attach them to the 4 corners of a photograph. The buttons will look like they are holding the photo to the page.
9. Create a bulleted list for journaling. Use buttons as the bullets.
10. Scrapbooking tags can be used for page elements, photo mats, and journaling blocks on a scrapbooking page. You can use a button to decorate the hole at the top of a tag.
11. Try placing a button on a page and then hanging the string from a scrapbooking tag from it as an anchor.
12. An antique, vintage or unusual button can be used individually on a page as a page element all its own. Try double matting the button to highlight it on your layout.
13. Attach a button to a page with the holes empty, or thread some floss through the holes and tie it in a knot or bow for an added accent.
14. Don’t limit yourself to one size of buttons on your page layout. Mix sizes and styles of buttons. You could stay with the same color, but have a variety of different buttons in that same color on a single page.
15. Buttons can be memorabilia. Save buttons from shirts, handbags, hats and other clothing that have sentimental value, but that you no longer can use. The buttons can be added to a scrapbooking page to remember the times when you wore those items. Baby buttons look cute on a baby page layout as well.

Organizing Your Computer Scrapbooking

The explosion of computers and the internet has led to an increased need for people to be ore organized with their computer scrapbooking. This is because we can have literally thousands of digital pictures and it is easy to get them all mixed up and lose the one that you really want when you come to working on your computer scrapbooking project.
The first step in organizing your computer scrapbooking files is to decide what you want to name them. Obviously, you want to have file names that are easy to understand for your computer scrapbooking needs and not simply the default name that a particular piece of software has given them. If you use a digital camera or camera phone you will soon realize that the file names are impossible to remember what the pictures actually are so you need to have a sensible computer scrapbooking system.
One key point to remember is that your computer scrapbooking files will automatically be sorted into alphabetical order. This can get confusing if you decide to have all your baby’s pictures named ‘January10′, ‘April21′ etc as they will appear out of date order. One method to organise your computer scrapbooking files by date is to use the numerical format year, month and then day. For example 20050110Baby and 20050421Baby, which will then allow for the computer to display them in the correct date order for you.
The second stage in organizing your computer scrapbooking files is to create folders that each type of file can be stored in. This will make finding the correct computer scrapbooking files much easier at a later date. For example, create anew folder called ‘Baby Pictures’ and save al of your baby photographs in that folder. If you follow the naming system then you will soon have the best organised computer scrapbooking system around.
Finally, it is also important to ensure that you create backups of all of your computer scrapbooking files. There are many archiving programs that can be used to compress large files and enable them to be stored on a CD or other removable disk. Again, it is essential that you label your CDs to keep your computer scrapbooking backups as organised as the originals. Obviously you can actually write on the CD itself but it is also worth remembering that you can alter the name of the CD that the computer reads when you load it. Most CD writing software prompts you to do this automatically but it is worth checking the instructions before you start burning all of your computer scrapbooking files onto CDs and then have them all mixed up.

You have likely heard the buzz about Cricut products. Its popularity and versatility are making the Cricut a legend in the scrapbooking and paper crafting world. Cricut is your personal cutting system that does not require a computer.
Its cartridge-based system allows you to cut thousands of beautiful shapes, letters, and phrases in a variety of styles with just the touch of a button. Cricut font and shape cartridges put hundreds of the freshest shapes, letters, and phrases created by leading scrapbook designers at your fingertips.
Knowing which Cricut products you will need and want can be helpful in getting started and using this fabulous product!
What Cricut Products Will I Need?
When you purchase your Cricut personal electronic cutter, you will receive the machine, a shapes cartridge and a cutting mat to get you started. After learning how to use the machine, however, you will certainly be inspired to purchase other Cricut products, likely starting with more Cricut cartridges.
There are dozens of these Cricut cartridges available for purchase, and they boast a wide range of themes, fonts, and styles. Your Cricut machine will use special blades and cutting mats that may need to be replaced after many uses. Plenty of other optional Cricut products are sure to tempt your creative bone as well. Cricut offers special paper, cardstock, and vinyl sheets, and you can even purchase special inks to be used with the machine.

It is a great idea to register your Cricut products on the company website. Cricut products are carefully manufactured from the highest quality materials. Should you have any problem with your Cricut products, however, Provo Craft does offer a limited warranty.
