5 Scrapbook Safety Tips
An unforeseen destrutive occurrence, or someone, ruining her creation, is most devastating to a “scrapbooker.”
Not only is this the loss of many hours, time, energy and money putting together a work of art that brings back memorable moments in times gone by, but it’s also the loss of pride and accomplishment that hurt!
Your scrapbook can meet its demise in many ways, and they’re listed below, but with just a few simple precautions, you can ensure your book stay around for years to come, delighting your grand childrens and family members with the memories of the past. Here are some pervasive elements to avoid:
Liquids obviously will destroy memorabilia, photographs and negatives. To avoid disasters, store your scrapbooks supplies, albums, photographs and negatives in a dry, cool place where water from broken pipes or overflowing toilets cannot reach them. Also, keep food and drinks out of your work area. Over time, sunlight can diminish photos, negatives, layouts, and album quality. Keep all supplies out of direct sunlight.
Extreme temperatures damage photos, negatives, layouts, page protectors and albums. Always store all items in a regular-temperature area and in an area where there is low humidity.
Although it may not be an immediately apparent problem, fingerprints on photos, negatives and layouts, become visible over time. Oil from skin is the cause of this problem. To prevent this deterioration, handle all photos carefully, touching only the outer edges. Wash hands frequently or use acid neutralizing wipes but make sure your hands are dry before handling any materials. Use lightweight cotton gloves if available to ensure those pictures stay perfect.
Handle and store your photos, negatives, and layouts carefully. Improper storage increases the risk of scratches, tears, and bends. Store and seal your photos and negatives in a sturdy container, in plastic sleeves that fit into a 3-ring binder, or in acid-free envelopes. Keep in mind that not all plastics are alike. In fact, some sheet protectors, binders, photo enclosures, and photo corners will eventually damage your memorabilia more than if you had not used plastic protection or enhancement at all. To avoid this, do not buy materials containing PVC or PVA, buy your materials from reputable scrapbook stores. Yes, it may cost you a bit more but your scrapbook will last so much longer. Look for acrylic or polyester materials as an alternative.
Finally, paper and cardstock you find in your local hobby store are not necessarily acid-free unless stated on the packaging. Also realize that just because a manufacturer’s lighter colored paper is acid-free does not guarantee the darker colors will also be.
Your best bet is to test any paper that is not specifically marked ‘acid-free.’

Keeping children busy with children’s activities during holiday periods can be expensive and thinking up new things to do with the kids can also be painful. Here is something fun that you can all do at home together.
My four year old daughter was lucky enough to get a children’s scrapbooking kit for Christmas. It consisted of a box with a whole lot of punched pages that we joined together to make a mini booklet. The kit also contained small embellishments, ribbons, stickers and dye cuts.
I quickly printed out some photographs from my computer for her to use and she had a ball doing up her scrap book. It kept her busy for days on and off, as she kept adding to it each time she walked past it. It is a never ending source of amusement to her and she loves showing it off to guests.
While she enjoyed herself, I was able to complete a few layouts of my own, which I normally don’t get a chance to.
All children love working with their hands and making pretty or practical things. Give them the help they need, but try not to tell them how to do each detail. Let them decide where they would like to put a sticker or let them color in the sun purple if that is how they want to do it. In this way you will see how their imagination can work for them, instead of how you want their imagination to work. I made the mistake of saying to my daughter “if I were you I wouldn’t put quite so many stickers on that page,” to which she replied “Well, you are not me!”
Here are some cheap scrapbooking ideas and solutions that you can use to keep your kids entertained for hours.
1. Give your kids all your scraps of patterned paper that you will no longer need. Encourage them to make their own backgrounds for their layouts by sticking the scraps together in patterns. You will be amazed at what they can come up with.
2. Give them their own tools, like child friendly scissors, glue, gel pens, rulers ect. In this way they will feel special as they will have their own kits, just like Mom.
3. There are loads of cheap stickers which can be bought and used. Children love stickers of their favorite TV characters or even of butterflies or teddy bears to decorate their layouts.
4. Do a family layout. Next time you visit somewhere special, tell your children to collect souvenirs that they can use in a layout. These can be coasters, tickets, flowers, shells or whatever tickles their fancy’s. When you get home you can then join all the memorabilia together and create a joint layout.
5. Cut shapes from scraps of material for them to play with and scrap. My four year old really enjoyed this.
6. Mini albums usually work better for the younger children, as it doesn’t take so long to complete a page.

Everybody gets a block from time to time. Whether it is a writer or scrapbooker you get blocked. The secret is to find a way to beat that block. What will you do when you get new ideas from what you are about to read. Lets listen to Jan’s story…
Jan was a very good scrapbooker. People told her all the time how much they loved her scrapbooks and the new ideas that she came up with. But this time, she was just staring at a blank page without a new idea coming into her mind. She knew that this happened to other people, but never to her. She did not know what to do.
Jan scoured the internet looking for new ideas, but still no new ideas came to mind. She really wanted a new idea, just not a repeat of something from before. Jan was suffering from scrapbooker’s block.
Jan’s block was really bothering her. She thought about it all the time. Now she was focusing on the block instead of the task at hand. She was no longer thinking of scrap booking, but of the block. She was so focused on it that she was preoccupied with it all the time.
Then a friend of her’s suggested that she look at a new book she had run across. Within a few hours Jan was back on track. Her latest scrapbook project was a great success.
Sometimes we all need a little help in getting over the hurdles in life. Jan found it. You can find it too.

Genealogy can be fun with children if you involve them in your family tree scrapbooking. This is just the kind of activity that children can really get into and learn a lot about your family’s unique history. It’s a way for them to learn without getting bombarded with names and dates which can result in them losing interest altogether.
Scrapbooking is also a great way to present your family tree because it can be passed around or giving, given as a gift or left on the coffee table to share with interested guests.
The scrapbook serves the dual purpose of both protecting your important pieces and presenting them in a handy way.
Personally, I would make copies of very important documents so that they can be cut and pasted without too much concern. With your copies and all the usual scrapbooking material in hand, you’ll be ready to get started. If not, then a quick trip to the craft store will provide lots of great paper and accents that you can use to make your scrapbook more decorative. If you are selecting your scrapbook, try to choose one that can hold a large amount of information and that allows pages to be added with ease. Remember, your family tree will be growing over the years and whoever inherits it, will want to be able to keep it updated.
Experienced scrapbookers know that you will want to give some thought to the layout before you actually commit yourself to one. Start with the oldest pictures and documents and the names and important dates for all the members of your family that you will include in the scrapbook. You will probably want to do just a few individuals at a time if the kids are younger because their attention span will be more limited.
Another thing to consider is if your scrapbook will be for just one side of the family or both. If your family is very large, it will be best to break it up into at least two scrapbooks. Next decide how far back you will go. Will you include great grandparents or only go as far back as your grandparents?
Have on hand colorful markers and help the children label everything properly. Craft stores have a lot of fun things to help decorate each page. Kids will really enjoy all the colorful stickers and helping them choose ones that seem to fit the personality of family members that they know will help them see the unique personalities that they all have.
There may be family members that you have limited information about, but don’t let that stop you. Is there an old family story about that person that can be transformed into a page with a combination of the kid’s drawings or colorful stickers? The types of hobbies they had can be shown on the scrapbook page with many stickers from the craft store. Did they have a recipe that was “famous” within your family? Did they write poems or make interesting things that can be added to your scrapbook? How do your kids remember them? Any special memories that the children have of them that would make a touching addition?
It’s easiest to make a single page dedicated to a particular individual or couple. Encourage the kids to call their favorite relatives and ask them a bit about their past so they can come up with ideas on how to best portray them. Kids can add their touch by adding their own comments about each person – perhaps their favorite memory of a particular person.
A family tree scrapbook can be a great way to pass the time during the winter months or on rainy days. It is time well spent because of all the memories your kids will have of putting it together and later showing it off!
